Know your fitness regimes: What is P90X?

Know your fitness regimes: What is P90X?

First things first, P90X is an intense home fitness regime meant for people who already have a certain amount of fitness. Designed to take 90 days – the programme consists of 12 intense workouts that use resistance and body-weight training, cardio, plyometrics, ab work, martial arts and yoga, along with a nutrition plan, fitness guide and workout calendar. It was made after a lot of research by trainer Tony Horton, it’s founder at Beachbody.

The workout comes with options of 3 levels: lean, classic and doubles and you can chose which one you want to take depending on your fitness and the amount of work you are willing to put in. The nutrition plan is just as important as the exercises, and it is important that you follow it in order to get results. This too is divided into 3 phases: Phase 1 is mainly proteins and less carbs, Phase 2 is more of carbs along with protein, and Phase 3 adds even more carbs to your diet.
One of the techniques employed in this regime that makes it so effective is called ‘muscle confusion’. It means that your body doesn’t get accustomed (and you don’t get bored!) to a certain workout leading to diminishing results. With P90x, you keep getting fitter every day. The programme comes with a set of 12 DVDs and gives you several options. For instance, if you don’t have certain equipment, you can use a basic home product as equipment. The exercises are meant to be done for approximately one-and-a-half hours, 6 days a week. The seventh day can be used to relax your muscles and do some stretching exercises.
The workout has it’s set of celebrity fans like Paul Ryan – the Republican vice president candidate for 2012 US elections, Pink – a popular Grammy award-winning singer, among many. The Beachbody website also has pictures of success stories, where you can see everyday people transforming their bodies into a ripped one within 90 days
